Algae are sunlight-driven cells that convert carbon dioxide to potential bio-fuels,and feed, and high value bioactives. Algae are promising organisms for providing both novel biologically active substances and essential compounds for human nutrition.

Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms which can be prokaryotic or eukaryotic and can grow in a wide range of environmental conditions. Microalgae produce lipids in the form of triacylglycerols or triglycerides. These triglycerides can be reacted with an alcohol in a reaction called transesterification or alcoholysis to obtain fatty acid methyl or ethyl esters for the production of biodiesel. For the production of biodiesel, the selected strain of algae must have very high growth rates and a very high lipid or oil content.
The main objective of present investigation is to isolate and characterize same of algal isolate which in future can be exploited for biodiesel production. It is well documented fact that Chlorophyceae class of microalgae possess small chain fatty acids which were found to be ideal precursors for biodiesel production. In our present investigation on the basis of morphology as well as PCR all four isolate belongs to green algae and can be potentially important in biodiesel production.
Out of four isolates Chlorella sp. Isolated from sattal lake was found to contain highest lipid content so can be regarded as potentially best candidate for biodiesel production. However, other isolates also showed higher lipid content.
