The concept of an embedded programmable logic controller (PLC) as parr of a much larger suite of dedicated control software to provide a flexible I/O interface for industrial microprocessor control systems is considered. The use of such a system allows modification of the system operation by semiskilled staff without compromising the integrity of the system software. The embedded PLC can also be used to control the overall function of a large system of dedicated software and hardware.
